CHIC IN THE CITY

Some of our favorite Interior Design projects have taken place right in the heart of New York – The Big Apple! NYC Interior Design is all about taking a small space, and making it significant. It allows us to be chic, but stylish – and elegant, but with an edge. Mixing metals and playing with patterns and textures has resulted in some our most stunning spaces to date! Here’s a peek at some of our new, fresh and fun designs!
We accessorized with objects of various heights, shapes, and finishes to create the vignette for the Manhattan apartment pictured above. Doing so creates visual interest and intrigue within a space! We incorporated different textures into the accessories (check out that spiked sphere, and metallic snake skin lamp – we love!), as well the wall-coverings, and fabric selections for our custom designed pillows. Here’s a closer look!

Pillows are a great way to accessorize any sofa or arm chair, and are a perfect way to carry the colors in your selected palette throughout your space! P.S. How adorable are those ceramic grapes?! Where are all of our wine lovers?

Our fun with mixing metals continued into the apartment’s dining room. We found the fantastic gold metal link dining table you see pictured above, and accented it with a fun silver metal bowl filled with white ceramic artichokes! Adjacent to the table we took a hammered metal silver serving tray, and hung it on the wall over the built-in fireplace as a funky art piece! Finding inventive ways to repurpose pieces can create some unique and fabulous designs!

We have so much fun selecting the furniture and finishings for all of our NYC apartments Interior Design! The perfect pieces bring personality and style to all of our projects. Additional “finishing touches” to add flair to any space include lighting, window treatments (such as the chic treatments pictured above and below!), area rugs, custom bedding (pictured below) and more!
It takes an endless array of elements to build a room. We absolutely love the challenge of tying these elements together to create something beautiful! And because we know that like us, many of you are busy professionals constantly on the move, we’ve created a “move-in ready” concierge service to fit all of your design needs! Call us at 1-800-MHR-3003 to learn more!

MAGNIFICENT MOROCCO!

Stepping away from the Interior Design of Long Island NY, I had the wonderful experience of visiting the beautiful Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, during a once in a lifetime trip to Morocco with my dear friend, Dawn! The Jardin Majorelle is an extraordinary garden that was once home to iconic designer, Yves Saint Laurent, who lived in the vividly blue building located on the premises. It is also the location of the beautiful Berber Museum he created, showcasing the stunning costumes and jewelry of the Berber culture. Berber women traditionally wore silver jewelry of great size and weight, a symbol of wealth gifted by their husbands at the time of marriage. The elaborate pieces are absolute works of art! Below is a look inside the Berber Museum and all of its beauty.

From the architecture to the fashion, inspiration was all around us. Arches, such as the one pictured below, are characteristic of Moroccan architecture, and are used on almost every door, entrance, and window! Doors are oversized and decorative?—?look at all of those carved metal details! Dawn and I couldn’t help but strike a pose in front of such a beautiful backdrop! How stunning are the jeweled tones used in the intricate ceramic mosaics?

I absolutely fell in love with the beauty of this country, and can’t wait to add flairs of Moroccan influence to future design projects! From fabrics, to wall coverings, adopting the colors and textures of Morocco add personality and fun. A perfect fit for any Hamptons Interior Design project! Traveling is a wonderful source of inspiration for me, and one of my greatest passions. I’ve recounted many of my experiences in my very own “Travels with Marilyn” editorials in House Magazine. Check the “Travels” section of our website for a collection of past travel diaries, and stay tuned to find out where I’m headed next!
Much to my surprise, I returned home from my trip to find a new Moroccan inspired wallpaper book from Cole & Son’s sitting in the office! I think they captured the spirit of Morocco perfectly, don’t you?

Buddha-ful Design!

The source of inspiration for our Hamptons Interior Design and NYC Apartment Interior Design projects usually comes from a playful pattern, a paint color, or a fun piece of furniture.
For our most recent project – one very close to my heart – the inspiration came from a beautiful art piece, gifted to me (and created by!) my daughter, and glass artist, Marlene Rose.
The piece, a Buddha sculpture made of hand-poured cast glass, inspired the redesign of my home’s family room!

Marilyn Rose - Hamptons Interior Designer

To carry the beautiful hues of chartreuse and cobalt blue around the room, I selected a variety of fabrics to re-upholster, and bring new life to my existing pieces – a sofa, bench, and two swivel chairs.

I chose to mix various textures and prints to create visual interest, and selected an overall neutral palette to elicit feelings of calm and serenity – much like the Buddha!  The piece also inspired the selection of a fresh new area rug and paint color, as well as wallpaper in the adjacent breakfast room and kitchen.

I chose a fun chevron pattern to reupholster my breakfast room chairs, and unify the two spaces.  While there are still some final decisions to be made, here are a few sneak peeks of what I’ve selected so far!

Marilyn H. Rose - Hamptons Interior Designer

In order for the art piece to serve as the focal point of the room, I chose to display it front and center on the re-designed mantle of my fireplace.  I decided to extend the mantle to support the size and weight of the sculpture, and added built-in spot lights to illuminate its beautifully colored glass! As the walls in my family room are quite high, I am also searching for a fun, decorative mirror to hang above.

Mirrors are a great way to accessorize a space, as their reflective quality adds light and expands a room.  Finishing touches for the room will include new window treatments, decorative pillows, and accessories!

Stay tuned for future updates!  I can’t wait to share the progress with you!

A special Thank You to my daughter, Marlene, for creating such a stunning piece!

Why A Turnkey Home May Be Right for You?

Hamptons Interior Designer - Marilyn Rose
Picture this: you’ve just closed on a beautiful apartment with killer views, and you’re thrilled to start using it as your weekend getaway. The problem? It’s totally empty, with no furniture, empty walls, and nothing on the windows. You’re extremely busy and don’t have the time to spend months and months decorating your second home.
Interior Designer projects in Hamptons
Guess what? A turnkey home might be right for you! Marilyn Rose Interiors specializes in concierge-level service for turnkey homes.
What does turnkey mean? It’s when you purchase a home or apartment, and your interior designer does all the work for you – when you enter, it’s fully furnished down to the bedsheets and towels.
Turnkey renovations are becoming increasingly popular, especially for buyers of weekend or vacation homes. Next time the Uber drops them off outside their new spot, they want to head upstairs, kick their feet up, and relax on the sofa – not spend months coordinating furniture delivery and painters from afar.
Bedroom-Hamptons Interior Designer
Turnkey renovations are also popular with buyers from outside the United States – they don’t have to worry about customs and shipping overseas, as we do it for them from here!
Realtors and developers are also loving turnkey options. When buyers see a model home fully furnished and outfitted, it’s much easier to sell the unit than it is a blank space with no furniture at all. Sometimes, they’re able to sell homes fully furnished as well – when you’re purchasing a home for $5 million, an extra $250,000 for all the high-end furniture inside, and the ability to move in right away, is an attractive deal.
Marilyn Rose Interiors designed the models for the Gracewood development on Long Island’s Gold Coast. These models helped the brokers sell the models much faster than they would have had they sat empty – most homebuyers can’t envision furniture layouts in a blank space. A well-designed model does the work for them.
The benefit of turnkey homes is that they take away the headache for the buyer. It’s effortless ownership – you purchase the home, and Marilyn Rose Interiors takes care of all of the project management and stress.
We recently completed an apartment in Manhattan for a client who utilized our turnkey service. When she arrived to her new weekend home, she didn’t have to worry about a thing! The linen closet was stocked, the bed was made, and the television was hooked up.
Whether you’re a buyer looking for a headache-free turnkey home or a broker/developer searching for gorgeous model homes that will sell quickly, Marilyn Rose Interiors is available for a complimentary consultation!

Our Top Tips for Decorating Your Kitchen

Kitchens - Hamptons Interior Design

Our Favorite Kitchens – and How We Accessorize Them

Kitchens have evolved over the past one hundred years from a closed-off space in the back of the house to the center of the home, both physically and emotionally. Even clients who don’t cook want a beautiful gourmet kitchen where the family can relax, chat, and eat their takeout dinners!
We work with a few great cabinetry vendors here on Long Island that help us create the beautiful cabinetry in the kitchens we’ve designed. Many people want white kitchen cabinets now, so we try to jazz these up and keep them interesting with unique backsplashes, window treatments, and accessories.
Keep it Family-Centered:
Kitchen islands are a great way to keep the kids and family close on weeknights. Kids can sit at the island with their homework while mom and dad cook. The family can gather around the table for family dinners.
Keep it Easy for Entertaining:
Islands are also great for entertaining. It gives guests a spot to “perch” during casual get-togethers, and you can spread out your hors d’oeuvres on the top of the island.
If you have space in your kitchen, we recommend doing a second sink and dishwasher on the island. For big dinner parties, you’ll need that extra dishwasher!
Double ovens are also great for big parties and get-togethers. No more trying to cook the souffle with the chicken cordon bleu!
Don’t Forget the Windows:
Kitchens, unlike most rooms in the house, are full of “hard” decorating elements. Cabinets, floors, tile, a table, wooden chairs – there’s not much space for the “soft” decorating elements that warm up a room. A simple roman or valance on your kitchen window is a nice way to add a little bit of pattern or color in your space, and to warm it up.
Lighting:
At Marilyn Rose Interiors, one of our main decorating principles is using tiered lighting. In kitchens, you need lots of task lighting.
We don’t always love using a lot of recessed lighting (or high-hats) because it doesn’t always make you look your best – but in kitchens it’s great for task lighting. We recommend having a little bit of recessed lighting, layered with other task lighting.
You can layer the lighting with pendants over the sink and/or island, and a chandelier over the breakfast table. You can also add under-cabinet lighting, to help provide more light when doing your kitchen tasks like cutting or chopping.
Accessories:
We don’t suggest overloading your countertops with too many knick-knacks, but we do like adding a curated selection of pretty accessories. A contemporary fruit bowl; a unique vintage cookie jar; great transitional candlesticks; there are many gorgeous options you can use to help complement your space. You can check out our online shop to find some great kitchen accessories.

The Top 10 Reasons You Need to Hire an Interior Designer

Long Island and hamptons Interior Design

Luckily, we’re here to help explain it to you!
Why work with Marilyn Rose Interiors if you’re in the middle of a new construction project?
  • We help you furniture plan – so all the outlets you’re paying your electrician a lot of money to install are actually behind where your nightstands will end up, not across the room.
  • We design custom millwork and moldings, so that your wainscoting is unique and to the perfect scale of your room.
  • We specify the light fixtures to ensure that all the work is done before the contractors leave. Having a contractor come back to wire for a chandelier because you forgot to pick one out = not good!
  • We are a full-service interior design firm. Our full-service option means that when you walk into your house after it’s been built and decorated, it is ready for interior design!
What does “Design Consultation” mean?
  • You’ve bought furniture but aren’t sure if it fits in your room or goes with the rest of your space.
  • You have a fabric you like for your window treatments, but you don’t know how to incorporate it into the rest of the house.
What if I just want a little “facelift” for my room, not a whole renovation?
  • This is ideal for the client who would like us to come in and accessorize their space with home accessories, artwork, etc.
  •  Our team will accessorize and style your room or home for a pulled-together look. We will begin by looking at existing artwork and decorative accessories you already have and re-working them around the room for a fresh look.
  • We have accrued vast resources of artists, antiques sources, and to-the-trade-only vendors – if you want anything new, we can specify it for you.
Does this all cost ten zillion dollars?
No! We pride ourselves on being able to work with clients of all budget ranges.
